Elmwood Retirement Village: Honest, warm, and full of heart

There’s no sugar-coating it — moving into a retirement village is a big decision. For many, it’s not about prestige or perks. It’s about finding somewhere comfortable, affordable, and connected. A place that feels familiar, not flashy. A place where you belong.

Elmwood Retirement Village in South Auckland is exactly that.

It’s honest, it’s down to earth, and it’s full of South Auckland people,” says Village Manager Kevin. “We don’t have any airs and graces here — we’re friendly, happy, community-focused. It’s a nice place to be.”

With only villas — no apartments or towers — Elmwood has a distinctly local feel. There’s a quiet pride in how things are done: with humour, humility, and heart.

A real community, not a façade

Resident Glenys has lived at Elmwood for two and a half years with her husband, Ray. They came from a large home near the Botanical Gardens, but were ready for a change.

“It was split-level and lots of maintenance,” she says. “We wanted to stay in the same area, and Elmwood ticked the most important boxes for us.”

Their favourite part? The people.

The spirit in our street — and in all the little streets in the village — is fantastic,” Glenys says. “If there’s news someone’s going in for a knee replacement, there’s a knock on the door: what can we do to help?”

“You’ll be welcomed by everybody here,” Kevin agrees. “We have a really strong committee and residents who organise events, trips, movie nights, bingo. The last two guys who moved in both said they ‘weren’t very social’ — now they’re going on every trip.”

From happy hours and pub quizzes to birthday morning teas hosted by the residents themselves, Elmwood is rich in resident-led energy.

“Yesterday we had the monthly birthday morning tea,” says Glenys. “Myself and two other ladies hosted it — we do the baking, savoury and sweet. Everyone just loves it. It’s really a nice thing to do.”

The kind of support you can feel

At Elmwood, support doesn’t just come from the neighbours. It’s built into how the village is run.

“For all intents and purposes, I run this place like a pub,” says Kevin. “We sit down at tables, have conversations, keep the energy moving. If something needs fixing, we fix it.

New residents get a full induction and are personally introduced around the village, to make sure they feel settled.

“We assign them a maintenance person for the first couple of weeks to help set them up” Kevin says. “We make sure they come to their first Happy Hour, get them on the mic and introduce them to everyone. But honestly, the residents take over from there. They host morning teas, drag them along to events… it’s amazing.”

And while the villas range in age, all are beautifully maintained and meet modern standards.

“Some cottages were built in the ‘80s, some in 2017 — but inside, the finish is exactly the same,” says Kevin. “Completely up to healthy homes. The design of our villas is fabulous. You’re going to get quality.”

Glenys agrees: “Any other resident can’t get over how big and well-laid-out our villas are. Ours gets full sun all day — it’s just lovely. And if we need anything, we raise it. Kevin arranged a dehumidifier for us recently — nothing’s a problem.”

A village that’s growing with its people

Elmwood isn’t a brand-new village, and that’s part of the charm. But it is changing.

The new care facility, with its own café, is already reshaping village life. It’s lively, welcoming, and open — and helping residents feel more familiar with care options.

Residents have access to two community hubs including exclusive access to the brand new cafe at the Care facilities, which is a constant hive of activity.

“I see fewer people in the community centre now,” says Kevin. “They’re getting coffee and cake over at the care facility. It’s broken down a few walls — people are more open to the idea of care when the time comes. And when we do have that conversation with families, it’s easier.”

That was our top must-have,” says Glenys. “That whichever one of us needed care, the other could walk there — not have to drive to Middlemore. You’re not confined. You can take them downstairs for a coffee.”

Meals can even be delivered to your villa if needed. Staff help wherever they can — from adding extra rails to arranging garden support. It’s about living independently, with the right backup when it matters most.

Across the road, a place to breathe

And then there’s the Botanical Gardens. Not just a “selling point” — but a daily joy.

Imagine wandering across the road on a sunny morning, cuppa in hand, and stepping into 64 hectares of native bush, birdsong, and walking trails. That feeling of fresh air, familiar soil, and a new chapter — all still connected to the life you know and love.
