There are many different types of rest homes throughout the Auckland region. We recommend
visiting several rest homes in Auckland to get a sense of the options available. If you
have specialised requirements such as requiring hospital care or dementia level care,
visiting the facility will help you to determine whether they offer the services you need.
Small rest homes tend to have 50 or fewer beds, whereas mid-sized rest homes have 50-100 beds.
Large rest homes have more than 100 beds.
Most Auckland rest homes offer at least two room types. Typically, you can opt for a
standard single room or a premium room. Standard rooms usually include space for two
small items of furniture, such as a television and armchair. Premium rooms usually
offer more space, as well as premium features such as an ensuite or garden access.

The Ministry of Health sets a ‘maximum contribution’ to put a cap on the amount any rest
home can charge per week. This limit is updated each year and depends on the location of
the rest home. It’s currently between $1,000 and $1,200 per week.
The only time the cost of an Auckland rest home may exceed the maximum contribution is
if you opt to receive premium services. Premium services
are not covered by the Residential Care Subsidy.
The Residential Care Subsidy
helps to cover the cost of living in an Auckland rest home. To be eligible, you must be
needs assessed to determine that you require rest home care. You must also meet the
financial criteria of the income and assets test.
Dementia Care covers a variety of illnesses that affect the brain, of which Alzheimer's
Disease is the most common. These illnesses are progressive, and tend to affect people
differently. Dementia Care in Auckland rest homes must be appropriately flexible to cater
to all levels.
To determine whether someone requires Dementia Care in Auckland, they must undergo a
Needs Assessment. This is a simple step that helps to determine the appropriate level of care.

Rest homes in Auckland must meet certain standards in order to offer Dementia Care Auckland.
These requirements are laid out in the Health and Disability Services (Safety) Act 2001,
and are compulsory for all rest homes in Auckland that wish to offer these services.

New Zealand as a guide for Dementia Care pathways. One of the key facets of this
framework is the concept of person-centred care.
Person-centred care means putting the dementia patient at the heart of all decision
making about their care in all rest homes. This includes acquiring consent for all decisions,
allowing the patient to take part in decision making, upholding their rights at all times,
clearly communicating with them, and providing a level of care and support reflective of
their personal background and needs.
