Auckland is home to one of the largest selections of rest homes in New Zealand, offering a wide range of residential care options across the region. You’ll find small, mid-sized, and large rest homes throughout Central Auckland, North Shore, South Auckland, West Auckland, and the Hibiscus Coast, with many providing both standard and premium room options.

Auckland offers multiple levels of residential care, and a needs assessment will determine the level of support required.

Residential Care Subsidy

You may be eligible for the Residential Care Subsidy, a government payment that helps cover the cost of long-term residential care. Eligibility depends on income and assets, as well as confirmation through a needs assessment.

The maximum weekly contribution for rest home care is set by Te Whatu Ora and varies by region. In Auckland, this typically ranges between $1,000 and $1,200 per week.

To learn more about eligibility, thresholds, and how the subsidy works, read our article explaining how the Residential Care Subsidy works in New Zealand.

Needs Assessment

A needs assessment determines whether a person meets the criteria for long-term residential care and what level of support they require (e.g., rest home, hospital, or dementia care). This assessment is completed through your local NASC (Needs Assessment and Service Coordination) service.

For more information about the process, see our article on everything you need to know about the needs assessment.
