“So yeah, it’s not a job. It’s not a role. It’s a privilege.”
For Catherine, Sales Manager at The Bayview by Oceania, retirement living isn’t just about matching people with homes - it’s deeply personal. Her journey into the role began long before her first day on the job.
“I’m a daughter..,” she says. “I started on that journey with Mum and Dad, and it took us 18 months before Dad moved into care and before Mum moved into a retirement village.”
That experience shaped her perspective.
“We were probably 18 months too late for Dad,” she shares.
But her mother’s story is different - filled with connection and joy.
She moved into a retirement village three years ago and she’s got great mates,” Catherine smiles. “Her two next door neighbours, we call them the Three Amigos, and she has the time of her life.”
And her mum’s only regret?
“She always says to me, ‘I’m so sorry, darling, we should have done it sooner.’”
That lived experience is why Catherine takes her work to heart.
“It’s a real personal role. I really take this as a real personal role - and that’s why I say it’s a privilege.”
She reflects on the kind of support she wished her own family had at the time.
If we’d had the advice and the help that I feel that we give to our residents, back when I was doing it with my parents, I think it would have been a better story.”
There’s always someone to share a cup of tea with, in the communal areas.
For Catherine, the right village can change everything.
Moving into retirement when the village is the right place for you - it only brings joy and happiness not only to the residents, but it brings peace of mind, comfort, and security to the rest of the family.”
Her belief is simple and heartfelt: “If the village is right for you, then it will feel right on your first visit.”
