Bev’s move to Awatere wasn’t rushed – it was a thoughtful choice to stay local, ease the burden of home ownership, and embrace a vibrant, friendly community – making the decision on her terms before it was made for her.
For Bev, the decision to move wasn’t sudden - it was sensible.
Having lived in Hamilton all her life, she knew she wanted to stay local.
Her home, situated just across the river, had served her well. But the rising costs of rates, insurance, and ongoing upkeep made her pause.
“I could no longer really afford to keep my place going as it should have,” Bev shares. “Everything was going up every year.”
Rather than wait for circumstances to make the decision for her, Bev chose to take the lead.
“I thought I’d look around and decide to move before I had to. I think it’s really important to make the move while you still have the choice - not when someone else tells you it’s time.”
“As soon as I saw this one, it ticked all the boxes,” she says. “It’s close to town - which I love - and everyone is so friendly. You’re never sitting on your own unless you want to be.”
More than just friendly neighbours, what Bev appreciates most is the peace of mind.
“The lack of worry, it’s just so relaxing,” she explains. “Your day is your own. You’re not thinking about mowing the lawn or sorting out the house. It’s more like…do I go down for coffee today? Or have lunch at the café?”

It’s that ease that shines through in her day-to-day life. And even her family has taken notice.
“When my son came over from Switzerland, he came to see where I was moving,” Bev recalls. “He looked around and said, ‘Fancy having to live in a place like this. It’s like a five-star hotel!’”
Looking back, Bev’s proud she took the leap.
Her advice to others thinking about retirement living?
“Do it while it’s your decision,” she says with a smile. “That makes all the difference.”
