It’s a small village and I get to know everyone. I am close to the beach, the shops, my church, and my tennis club,” she says.
“Everyone here’s very friendly, and you can often meet someone in the lounge or dining room and have a cheery word. We can also meet up at the cafe.”

Mary adds, “There’s always someone around. I come and go a lot, and I still work part-time — but knowing someone’s nearby just gives you that reassurance. When it rains, I don’t care. I don’t have to do anything!”
That same ease extends to the social life at Lady Allum. You won’t find a pool or a bowling green, but residents say it’s the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that makes this place special.
We don’t have all the bells and whistles,” says Susan. “But we do have nice gardens, sunny communal areas, and a really good vibe. Everyone here knows it’s a friendly environment.”

Some activities are staff-organised, while others are led by residents. From exercise classes and quiz nights to themed dinners and shopping buses, there’s something for everyone — and no pressure to take part.
“Since COVID, I started running a bingo group,” says Mary. “You can do as much or as little as you like.”
Exciting things on the horizon
Lady Allum is evolving — there’s a beautiful new shared space on the way.
“They’ve cleared the site, and right now it’s just this big open space with green grass,” says Mary. “It’s lovely. The plans look really welcoming.”
Caroline, the Village Manager, adds: “The ducks have already arrived! It used to be farmland, and now I can sit in my office and look out over that space. Eventually, it’ll be a central hub for everyone — a place that connects both buildings.”
Although the original care home has been cleared, we have a beautiful facility offering rest home, hospital-level, and secure dementia care in a modern, welcoming environment.

“One day if I have to come here,” says Mary, “I think I’ll be happy. I already do visiting in the care centre — and it’s such a lovely space.”
