A fresh start in Auckland at Eden Village

If you’re thinking about moving to Auckland to be closer to family, Eden Retirement Village could be just what you’re looking for. Tucked between Mt Eden Village and Dominion Road, this boutique, close-knit village offers easy living in one of Auckland’s most sought-after central suburbs.

Many residents have made a big move from places like Fielding, Havelock North, Whanganui, and even Melbourne and Sydney to start a new chapter near their children or siblings. Making a move later in life can feel daunting, but Eden’s welcoming community and easy, central location help make the transition feel surprisingly smooth.

It’s a really lovely village,” says Sue, Village Manager. “We’re nestled in amongst all the beautiful villas of Mt Eden, with stunning views of the maunga itself — literally just a five-minute walk to the base.”

Communal gardens connect the community.

With only 89 apartments split across two buildings, Eden has the feel of a true neighbourhood. Everyone knows your name, and there’s always someone up for a cuppa.

“It’s not one of those huge villages that are built these days,” says Sue. “We open out onto the street in Mt Eden, so we’re very connected with our local community. It’s not a big gated complex. It’s a very different feel.”

Welcoming people from all walks of life

Eden Village attracts people from all over — both longtime Aucklanders and those making a fresh start close to family. That mix creates a diverse, down-to-earth community where it’s easy to feel at home, no matter your background or story.

“I didn’t know a single person here… but I’ve found the community extremely congenial,” says Marie, who moved to Mt Eden after nearly four decades in Sydney.

“There are people here who are born in 14 different countries. Everyone is friendly and helpful.”

The welcoming atmosphere was a big part of the decision for Maureen, too, who moved up from Fielding to be closer to her sons.

I absolutely love it — the minute I walked in the door, I thought oh yes, I like the look of those people. They look like me.”

Whether it’s a shared laugh over morning tea or a friendly invitation to try something new, residents say it’s the people who make Eden feel like home.

Everything you need is close by

One of Eden’s most loved features is how easy it is to get around. With frequent public transport and local shops just a short stroll away, residents say it’s one of the best-connected spots in central Auckland.

“We have buses going past every 10 minutes — even more sometimes,” says Sue. “A lot of our residents use their Gold Cards. You can walk to Mt Eden Village, or jump on a bus into the city in 7 minutes.”

For Chantal, a self-proclaimed “gym bunny”, who still loves to run and cycle, the location sealed the deal.

That was the reason why we chose this village — the location is good, the bus stops are just around the corner. My husband and I walk to the café in Mt Eden and go have a coffee there quite a lot.”

Maureen, who moved up from Fielding, also credits the location for helping her adjust to city life.

“I’d never taken much notice of Auckland’s layout… but it’s so easy to drive around here.

“I also walk to places – to the supermarket, local shops and cafes in Mt Eden Village.”

There’s always something on

While the central location draws people in, it’s the lifestyle that keeps them connected. There’s always something happening, and always someone to enjoy it with.

“We’re not cliquey,” says Sue. “There’s a diverse mix of people and so much going on. Singing group, bridge, mahjong, chair yoga, quizzes, movies… something every single day.”

Residents love having the freedom to join in as much or as little as they like.

“There’s usually 8–12 of us who meet for coffee in the café every morning,” says Maureen. “We chew over the fat and enjoy each other’s company.”

Chantal, who is originally from France, loves that there is a pool table onsite.

“We play pool every day — I played when I was 18 or 19 back in France. There’s always something social happening. On Wednesday nights we do dinner. It’s nice and friendly.”

Apartments that work for your lifestyle

With two buildings, Eden offers a range of apartments to suit different budgets and lifestyles.

“People who move from the provinces often appreciate that we have affordable options,” says Sue. “They get all of the same benefits — it’s the same village.”

For Maureen, her one-bedroom apartment has been a perfect fit.

“I love the view — I look out over Mt Eden rugby grounds. I’ve got a beautiful lounge, a storage area downstairs. Of course I don’t need two bedrooms. I condensed a little more.”

Marie appreciates the ease and security that comes with village living.

“I chose it because it’s a small village. I wanted to get to know everyone, and the security means I can still travel a bit — I just lock up and leave.”

More than a home

What makes Eden truly special is the people.

“The staff here are really wonderful,” says Maureen. “If you have a small technical problem with the iPad or the television, they come right over. And the maintenance guy — if we need anything, he gets it sorted. They’re all very good.”

Marie agrees: “There’s never a shortage of people to help, or start off activities others might enjoy. If I don’t appear for a day or two, people will notice. People look out for you, which I find very touching.”

That sense of care flows both ways. For Village Manager Sue, it’s the people that make her job so rewarding.

“You get to know the families, the siblings, the friends. It’s like a family. You realise people are exactly like you and I, just a generation older… and it’s nice to have a laugh with them.”
