Haumaru Housing is an Auckland-based community housing provider which provides holistic tenancy and asset management services for Auckland Council’s portfolio of 1,527 rental units for older people across 63 villages in Auckland.
Established in late 2016, it is a limited partnership between New Zealand registered charity, The Selwyn Foundation, and Auckland Council and is the only provider that uniquely specialises in affordable rental housing for seniors. With its consistently high rates of tenant satisfaction, and its community participation and outreach within local neighbourhoods, Haumaru’s mission is as much about enhancing older people’s wellbeing as it is about providing housing.
Promoting social connection
Staying socially connected is essential for tenant wellbeing. Haumaru Housing therefore supports a wide range of activities to help tenants remain socially active and stay in touch with others in their local community.
Tenants are able to enjoy minivan outings to local attractions, participate in community events, and stay up-to-date with current happenings or socialise with other tenants at regular village gatherings or neighbourhood information sessions. Such activities are facilitated by Haumaru’s dedicated team of Community Managers in partnership with The Selwyn Foundation, Local Boards and other community groups.
Applications opening soon for new homes in West Auckland
42 brand new rental homes which are currently under construction at 81A Godley Road in Green Bay (West Auckland) will soon be open for applications from people over 65 years of age who are eligible for social housing.
The new one-bedroom units will be within a two-storey apartment building complex specifically designed for older people and will provide affordable, safe and comfortable homes for seniors in need.
All units will qualify for Income-Related Rent.
With construction due to be completed towards the end of 2026, Haumaru Housing looks forward to being able to provide even more affordable, safe and secure rental homes for seniors in the future.

Applying for a Haumaru Housing home
Haumaru Housing offers comfortable one-bedroom homes for singles or couples who can live independently. Two rental models are available:
- A social housing model, which is available for people who are eligible for the Social Housing Register.
- A subsidy model, which offers 50% of the market rent on selected units; this is designed for seniors who are not eligible for the Social Housing Register or who choose not to apply.
