New friends, new experiences

Company and security at Dannemora Gardens

It was a long, wet winter that made Margaret start thinking about retirement village living. She’s always been active – out and about with friends, walking, working in the garden. She never thought village life was for her, but day after day of rain was getting her down. She felt stuck at home and sometimes even a little depressed.

When a flyer for a retirement village’s open day fell out of the daily paper, she decided to have a look.

“I showed my daughter the flyer, and she said, ‘You never talked about anything like that before, Mum!’ But we went together for a visit.”

“Nana’s hotel”

Margaret inspected several villages before she made her choice. Dannemora’s modern facilities and extensive activities calendar were up there with the best, but it was the village’s excellent location that won her over.

“In the end, it was the locality that I liked. Here I’m near all the shops.”

While Margaret’s children and grandchildren didn’t make the decision about Dannemora Gardens for her, they came for visits and certainly were impressed and supportive. Her son was particularly complimentary.

“He said, ‘It’s just like living in a resort!’ And my eight-year-old grandson really likes going to ‘Nana’s hotel’!”

Nothing she doesn’t like!

Margaret is very happy she made the move to Dannemora Gardens. She still has plenty to keep her busy and she feels that any older person living alone could benefit. She knows it’s a big decision and suggests people who aren’t sure to take a whole day to experience village life.

“For myself, there’s nothing I don’t like about the village. It has company, activities, security and regular maintenance. I’ve met new people and tried new activities, and gone to places I never visited before.”

Her advice to prospective residents?

“Don’t wait! Come in now, and enjoy the lifestyle sooner!”
