Visiting rest homes in Dunedin

There are many rest homes in Dunedin. It’s a good idea to visit several in-person to get a sense of what’s available and to compare options. Visiting rest homes will help you understand the different services they offer, including different levels of care.

Types of rest homes in Dunedin

There are rest homes of all sizes and types in Dunedin. Some are small and boutique (with fewer than 50 beds), some are mid-sized (with 50-100 beds), and some are large (with over 100 beds).

There are generally two room types available: standard and premium. Standard rooms usually have space for a single bed and a few small items of personal furniture, such as a television or an armchair. Premium rooms come with premium features which differ from rest home to rest home. Common premium features include extra space, garden access, or a private ensuite.

Some rest homes in Dunedin provide a full continuum of care, including specialist care such as dementia and psychogeriatric care. Others only provide rest home level care and/or hospital level care.

How to search for rest homes in Dunedin

You can use Village Guide to search for rest homes in Dunedin. Our search function allows you to filter by suburb, level(s) of care, and more. If you already have an operator in mind, just enter the operator’s name into the search box.

How much do rest homes in Dunedin cost?

The cost of living in a rest home depends on factors such as the type of care a resident needs, the type of room they choose (e.g. standard vs. premium), and their eligibility for the Residential Care Subsidy. Our rest home care resource page has more information about costs.

The Residential Care Subsidy

The Residential Care Subsidy contributes towards the cost of living in a Dunedin rest home. Only those requiring long-term residential care (as concluded by a Needs Assessment) are eligible. Residents will also need to meet the criteria of an assets and income test.

Maximum Contribution

The Maximum Contribution is a cap on the amount of money a rest home can charge a resident each week for standard care (it excludes premium rooms and services). It’s set by the Ministry of Health and updated annually each year in July. The current Maximum Contribution for Dunedin is $1,118.25 [source: Gazette, May 2020].

Dementia care is specialised care for people with memory-related conditions (such as Alzheimer’s Disease) or cognitive impairment. As these illnesses affect people differently and are progressive, dementia care must be flexible to accommodate a wide range of needs. Several rest homes in Dunedin offer specialised dementia care.

Who is eligible for Dementia Care in Dunedin?

To receive dementia care, residents must be assessed as requiring this level of care by a Needs Assessment. To arrange a Needs Assessment, please contact your local branch of NASC (Needs Assessment and Service Coordination).

Standards for Dementia Care in Dunedin Rest Homes

Rest homes offering dementia care are frequently audited to ensure they meet the standards set out by the Health and Disability Services (Safety) Act 2001. These are compulsory standards that apply to any rest home providing dementia care.

Find Dementia Care in Dunedin

You can filter rest homes on Village Guide by dementia care. Near the top of this page, just beneath the banner and the green ‘search rest homes’ button, there’s a drop-down menu called ‘level of care’. Select dementia care from the menu to only display rest homes that offer this type of care.

Person-centred care in Dunedin Rest Homes

A cornerstone of dementia care is person-centred care. This term refers to placing residents at the heart of their health plan. It’s an important part of the New Zealand Framework for Dementia Care by the Ministry of Health. Key features of person-centred care include obtaining consent from residents about all decisions made about their health and delivering care that is mindful of someone’s personal background and needs.
